Meg Enright is a thirty nine year
old wife, mother and business woman. Her husband John is managing director of a
storage company, daughter Carrie a second year college student and son Tommy set to do his final exam at secondary school. Meg runs a soft furnishings
store with her best friend Lynn. That is the public persona of Meg Enright .
The real Meg is revealed as we
witness the coldness of her marriage, the defiance of her adolescent son and
the mysterious disappearance of her daughter while on a summer trip to the USA.
When daughter Carrie eventually arrives home, she seems to have undergone a
personality change. She announces to the family that she has joined Inner Light
Movement , a quasi-religious cult founded by Matt Hemmings in Maine.
Meg’s misgivings are confirmed as she sees her daughter come increasingly under
the influence of Matt Hemmings and his son Garth.
Turning to her husband for support
,Meg fails to find the help she needs from John. His only interest seems to be in
monitoring his new business partner, Yan Gilmore, recently arrived from New Zealand and with defending himself against
accusations of sexual harassment made by his secretary, Francine Keyes. When son Tommy gets involved with unsavoury characters,
it seems the whole fabric of Enright family life is being ripped apart.
Meg reaches breaking point when she
discovers that the relationship between her best friend Lynn and husband John
has become more than friendship. Hurt and humiliated, Meg has to reach deep
inside to find strength. Can she save her marriage? Does she want to? Will she
be able to free her daughter from Matt Hemmings' influence, will she manage to prevent her
son from sliding into a life of crime?
